Newstead has welcomed a major new dining destination with the opening of Comuna on Cunningham Street. The venue, located at 27 Cunningham Street, officially launched its doors this week, bringing a fresh wave of Mexican-inspired cuisine to the inner-city suburb.
The new spot is the latest expansion for Together Hospitality, the portfolio behind well-known Brisbane establishments such as Corbett & Claude and Tetto Rooftop Bar. It marks the group’s largest venue to date, signalling a significant step forward for the business in the local market.
A Hacienda-Style Space Designed for Brisbane Living
According to The Urban List, the interior design draws heavily on a hacienda-style aesthetic, featuring a palette of soft pinks, layered neutrals, and warm desert tones. The layout is expansive, flowing seamlessly between indoor and outdoor zones to capitalise on Brisbane’s balmy climate.
Multiple dining zones have been created to suit different occasions, ranging from long lunches and family feasts to casual knock-off drinks. The design ensures the space feels versatile, allowing guests to move easily between areas depending on the time of day and the size of their party.

The venture is led by hospitality legend Tim Johnson, who has a strong track record in the city’s dining scene. Speaking on the new opening, Johnson highlighted the strategic importance of the location for the Together Hospitality group.
“This venue is a significant step forward for us and a project we’ve been incredibly passionate about,” Johnson said. He noted that Newstead is one of Brisbane’s most dynamic suburbs, and the team wanted to create something that genuinely adds to the lifestyle of the area.
Johnson added that the goal was to build a place where people can drop in for a morning coffee, lunch, after-work drinks, or dinner and feel instantly at home. The name Comuna, which literally means community, reflects this focus on creating a local hub.
Menu Highlights and Dog-Friendly Features
On the food front, the new restaurant will serve the brand’s signature zesty tacos and premium cocktails. The menu also includes the group’s crowd-favourite bottomless weekends, a feature that has proven popular at their other locations.
The team has also tailored the offering to the specific needs of the Newstead community. Bespoke picnic setups are available for guests looking to enjoy the neighbouring green space. Additionally, the venue has introduced a dedicated dog menu for the pups that frequent the nearby park.
