A permanent showroom for Swedish luxury bedmaker Hästens has officially opened inside the Great Dane furniture store on Prospect Street in Fortitude Valley. The new space marks the first permanent Australian presence for the 170-year-old brand, bringing its handcrafted mattresses to Queensland’s inner-city market.
The showroom is located at 2 Prospect Street, where Great Dane founder Anton Assaad has created a dedicated space for the Swedish brand. Assaad first encountered the brand after travelling to Sweden following the pandemic, describing the factory visit as “beyond anything we could comprehend.” He noted that the passion of the makers there completely changed his understanding of the craft.
Handcrafted Heritage and Local Passion
Hästens has remained in the same family for six generations, with many artisans working at the same benches their grandparents once occupied. The brand is committed to a slower, more deliberate way of making things, a philosophy that has defined its approach since 1852.
Each bed is engineered to regulate temperature and absorb movement, featuring up to 37 individual layers depending on the model. These layers are handcrafted and layered by hand using natural fibres including horsehair, wool, flax, and cotton. The bedding is made to order and backed by a 25-year warranty.
Reflecting on the importance of rest, Assaad noted that since people spend a third of their lives in bed, it is vital to prioritize the quality of their sleeping surface. This perspective has struck a chord with Queenslanders, who are increasingly treating sleep with the same seriousness as movement, nutrition, and recovery. Queensland has now become one of Hästens’ strongest markets nationally.

The new Fortitude Valley location is open for short browses and private consultations. Customers can experience the mattresses firsthand in a space that reflects the brand’s commitment to providing extraordinary beds. The showroom joins Great Dane’s existing presence in Paddington, Sydney, and Collins Street, Melbourne.
