Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley landmark, The Calile Hotel, has been recognised on the prestigious La Liste 2026 World’s Best Hotels ranking. The property secured a score of 91.5, placing it among the top tier of hotels globally.
This achievement marks another milestone for the Malouf family-owned resort. La Liste, a Paris-based organisation, compiled its 2026 list by analysing 7,300 luxury hotels across more than 200 countries. The algorithm aggregates data from over 1,100 professional sources, including established guides like the Michelin Guide and Zagat.
Australia’s Strong Showing on the Global Stage
The 2026 rankings highlight a significant presence for Australian hospitality. A total of 33 Australian hotels scored 90 or above on the global list. While Sydney’s Capella Sydney and Park Hyatt topped the Australian contingent, The Calile stood out as a key representative for Queensland.
The Calile Hotel joins a select group of properties that have maintained high scores across professional and public reviews. La Liste’s content team noted a trend where top-scoring hotels focus on a holistic approach to food rather than relying on a single celebrity chef.
According to delicious.com.au, the ranking process involved crunching numbers from millions of digital reviews published in dozens of languages. The final list of 1,000 best hotels included 10 properties that achieved a perfect 99.5 score.
James Street’s Culinary and Design Hub
The Calile’s success reflects its reputation as a culinary and design destination within the James Street precinct. The hotel features six distinct dining outlets, including Hellenika, which serves Greek cuisine overlooking the pool.
Other venues on-site include Same Same for Southeast Asian flavours, the Sushi Room for upmarket Japanese dining, and SK Steak and Oyster for grill mainstays. The Lobby Bar offers all-day dining and drinks in a pink-hued setting.
The hotel’s design, created by Brisbane-based architects Richards & Spence, blends modernist Miami and Palm Springs styles with 1960s Australian aesthetics. The property features a 30-metre pool deck with sage green umbrellas and cabanas that can be booked for dinner or cocktails.

The Calile Hotel has established a consistent track record of excellence in recent years. In 2025, the hotel was ranked 34th on The World’s 50 Best Hotels list for the third consecutive year.
Co-owner Catherine Malouf previously stated that being selected three years in a row marks a significant affirmation of the hotel’s place on the global stage. General Manager Chris Kemlo added that the recognition is a testament to the team’s professionalism and genuine care for guests.
The hotel opened in 2018 and quickly became known for its “laid-back Aussie spirit.” It offers 175 rooms designed with a neutral, chic palette of peach, rose, and pistachio. The property also features the Kailo Medispa, providing onsite cosmetic physician services.
