New Openings Across the Valley: What’s Poppin’, Jiva on Brunswick and NIIWA

Fortitude Valley Food Scene: New Dirty Soda Bar, Cocktail Lounge, and Japanese Breakfast Launch

From a dedicated dirty soda bar in California Lane to a music-driven cocktail lounge on Brunswick Street opening in May,  the region is bracing for a wave of fresh openings.

These upcoming launches follow the recent success of NIIWA on James Street, which launched its own weekend breakfast series earlier this month. Together, these venues signal a shift toward more specialised, experience-led dining in the heart of the inner north.

What’s Poppin’ brings dirty soda to California Lane

Founders Madi and Will are taking their popular mobile business, What’s Poppin’, to a permanent brick-and-mortar location. After starting the venture from a pink-hued trailer in 2024, the duo will open a dedicated dirty soda dispensary at the entrance to California Lane in the coming weeks.

The new venue will expand on the menu that made them social media stars. While retaining fan favourites like the Sodies (Coca-Cola, fresh lime, coconut and coconut cream) and the fruit-forward Slay (Sprite with pineapple, passionfruit and fresh lemon), the site will introduce larger sizes and new energy-based drinks.

The American-style beverage trend has taken off globally, but this local operation is leading the charge in Brisbane. The team is preparing to cut the ribbon on the cosy site soon, offering a permanent home for the customised drinks that have flooded feeds recently.

Jiva on Brunswick opens with a focus on rhythm and rhythm

Fortitude Valley’s nightlife is set to evolve next month with the arrival of Jiva on Brunswick. Taking over the former Lang’s Lounge site, this new mood-driven cocktail bar will officially open its doors on Friday, 15 May.

The venue is designed so that music and atmosphere move in sync. DJs will curate set lists blending soul, funk, R&B, Afro house and amapiano from Wednesday to Sunday, taking pride of place at the front of the venue.

Behind the bar, the team is serving a tight list of signature cocktails and globally inspired pours that nod to flavours from South Africa to South America. The opening night will feature a performance by Grammy-nominated producer, songwriter and artist Bantu, whose unique blend of Afro house and amapiano will kick things off.

With a vibrant aesthetic featuring warm hues and expressive artwork, the indoor and outdoor spaces are designed to encourage guests to unwind. The operators are channeling a lifelong love of music into a space that hums with rhythm and an all-are-welcome approachability.

NIIWA launches weekend breakfast with Japanese-style sandos

James Street newcomer NIIWA has been cultivating a loyal following since it opened earlier this year. The chic eatery, known for its Japanese-inspired share-style eats and inventive cocktails, launched its own weekend breakfast series earlier this month.

Head chef Winston Law is putting forth a menu of refined morning fare that blends modern and traditional techniques. The breakfast is available every Saturday and Sunday from 8:00–10:30 am.

Anchoring the menu is a range of Japanese-style sandos, which are fried slices of shokopan encasing a choice of Japanese egg salad or vanilla whipped cream. Other highlights include matcha pancakes with maple syrup, kinako, vanilla ice-cream and seasonal berries, as well as Tokyo-style eggs Benedict with miso hollandaise sauce.

Patrons can also expect glossy omurice and wagyu breakfast burgers. The addition of this morning service builds on the venue’s reputation for high-quality, flavour-driven food that has already proven a hit with the local dining community.
