Big Sound 2026 Returns to Fortitude Valley with Major Artist Announcements

BIGSOUND is set to celebrate its 25th anniversary by returning to Fortitude Valley from 1 to 4 September 2026. The event will feature a high-profile Artist In Conversation programme headlined by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and Julia Jacklin.

According to Backseat Mafia, the festival aims to strengthen connections between Australian artists and the global music industry. This year’s lineup reflects the event’s role as a bridge for local talent seeking international opportunities.

Local legends and rising stars take centre stage

Stu Mackenzie and Lucas Harwood of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will discuss the band’s journey from 2013 showcase artists to one of Australia’s most celebrated acts. The group has released more than 25 albums and maintains a fiercely independent creative philosophy.

Julia Jacklin returns to the stage a decade after her first appearance in 2016. She will share insights on her career path following her debut album Don’t Let The Kids Win and her recent global deal with 4AD. Jacklin has earned multiple ARIA nominations and cultivated a significant international audience.

Ngarrindjeri producer and composer trials will also join the programme. Known for his work with Funkoars and A.B. Original alongside Briggs, trials is stepping further into the spotlight following his acclaimed solo debut hendle.

Global delegates and industry heavyweights arrive in Brisbane

The conference component of BIGSOUND 2026 brings together representatives from influential names in global music. Chris Fraser from Partisan Records and Pitchfork associate staff writer Nina Corcoran are among the confirmed delegates.

Bonnaroo talent buyer Bryan Benson and Mom+Pop Music co-owner Thaddeus Rudd will also attend. Jessica Moss from Soho House London joins them alongside delegates from SXSW, The Great Escape, MOJO in the Netherlands, and CUEW Showcase & Conference in Japan.

International representation extends to India International Music Week, Skillbox, BBC Radio 1, Bandcamp, Rough Trade, Reeperbahn, and Sziget. This diverse group highlights the growing international reach of the Brisbane event.

Community initiatives and long-standing traditions continue

BIGSOUND 2026 will see the return of popular initiatives including Roundtables, Conversation Corners, the Artist Hub, Delegate Hub, and Content House. These programs facilitate networking and professional development for industry participants.

The event will also host Goolwal Goolwal, the First Nations-led programme. This initiative combines free cultural experiences by day with live music after dark, celebrating Indigenous culture and music.

For a quarter of a century, the festival has occupied a unique place in Australian music. It has helped launch and accelerate the careers of artists ranging from Flume and Courtney Barnett to Tash Sultana and Tones And I.

Additional technology and partner showcases are set to be announced in the coming months. Full details regarding the event can be found on the official BIGSOUND website.
